What is a Good Response Time For a Gaming Monitor?

Spread the love

When you buy a new gaming monitor, of course you want to get the best that your money can buy. However, you will notice that there are gaming monitors for around $100, while there are also some which can run you a couple thousand dollars. What’s the big difference between the cheaper ones and the expensive ones?

We’re not here to talk about screen resolution or how many pixels the displays have, but about the pixels themselves, specifically in terms of the response times and refresh rates of those pixels. It’s all about providing you with a smooth and fluid gaming experience.

What is Response Time and Refresh Rate?

Simply put, the response time on your monitor or display is how long it takes for the individual pixels to change color. This response time is usually always measured in milliseconds, as response times have become incredibly fast. Now, you might be wondering what the difference between response time and refresh rate is.

There is a difference per se, but technically they are both linked together very closely, and they both rely on each other. Whereas the response time is how long it takes for pixels to change color, the refresh rate is the speed at which the monitor’s image can change. Yes, they are very closely related to each other, and for the common Joe, it might sound like the exact same thing.

What is Response Time and Refresh Rate

For all intents and purposes, as far as killing the enemy in your new Call of Duty game goes, it really is more or less the same thing. Response times and refresh rates of displays are all about how fast those pixels can display new images and change colors to match those new images. This is really important when it comes to high-speed games such as racing games and first-person shooters as well.

What is a Good Response Time For a Gaming Monitor?

Simply put, the faster your monitor responds, the better off you are. Your basic LCD display is going to have a response time of around 15 or 16 milliseconds, but this is being improved upon. When it comes to high-speed gaming and fast-action shooters, this is actually considered to be quite slow.

It can cause a visual trail, blurriness, and choppiness, which is not great if you are looking to get that head shot. For this reason, most gamers will always try to avoid LCD displays. The ideal response time for a gaming monitor is actually around 5 milliseconds or less. Most will tell you that the ideal response time for a gaming monitor is 1 millisecond, which means that the pixels can change colors up to 1,000 times per second.

However, this is really only necessary for really high-speed games and for competitive gamers. For the most part, if you are just a normal gamer, or even an avid gamer, anything under 5 milliseconds will do just fine. There’s also the fact that most of our eyes cannot keep up with 1,000 changes per second, therefore actually being a bit of overkill as human eyes cannot register such lighting quick changes. But generally speaking, the faster the better.

Good Response Time For a Gaming Monitor

If you are a hardcore gamer, also keep in mind that you want the display to have a very high refresh rate as well. Normal computer monitors usually come in at around 60 Hz in terms of the refresh rate, which is not really good enough for gaming. There are great gaming displays with 144 Hz or even 240 Hz refresh rates. In terms of gaming, if you are serious, as high a refresh rate and as low a response time as you can go, is going to be the ideal.

Final Thoughts

If you are somebody that loves to game, you might want to go for something that has a refresh rate of 144 Hz or higher, combined with a response time of 5 ms or less. However, if you are a serious and hardcore gamer, maybe even competitive, a 240 Hz refresh rate and a 1 ms response time is what you want to go for.

Do keep in mind that a gaming monitor like this, the best of the best, is also going to cost you a pretty penny. However, most would agree that the price is worth it, seeing as fast response times and refresh rates cut down on visual blur and choppiness. It just allows for a much better gaming experience.
